Dear members of the Afroeuropeans Network,

We are happy to announce the 8th biennial conference of the Afroeuropeans Network, and acutely aware of the particular context in which we do so. The impact and consequences of racism have become the centre of global attention, while the COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated existing inequalities. The need to come together to share our thoughts and struggles is greater than ever. We hope to offer such a space for interaction and reflection.

The Afroeuropeans Network conference will be held 7-10 July 2021 in Brussels, on the campus of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and is organised by an international team affiliated to different universities and in collaboration with academic and non-academic partners across Brussels and beyond. The conference focuses on Intersectional Challenges in Afroeuropean Communities and aims to be a conference for, by, and with Afroeuropeans, with the contribution of their allies and in dialogue with other marginalised groups.

This email invites proposals for panels related to one of the conference streams, which address a range of disciplines and topics, from the arts to technology and from decolonisation to political representation. Selected panels will be advertised on the website, at which point panel convenors will be encouraged to invite their contacts to respond to the call for papers for their panels and to consider alternative performative formats alongside academic papers. More information can be found at www.afroeuropeans2021.com.

We are aware that the COVID-19 pandemic may continue to disrupt our lives in the summer of 2021, but are determined to do our very best ensure that your accessibility to the dialogues and proceedings of 8th Afroeuropeans Network Conference.

We look forward to receiving your proposals for panels by 1 September 2020. The organising committee, in collaboration with the stream convenors, will communicate their decisions by 15 October 2020.

Please feel free to share this invitation with your network.

Best wishes,

The Brussels 2021 team,
